Medicare

As a physician, I'm a firm believer in the old adage, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". As a Member of Congress, I want to make sure our federal health programs, like Medicare, are emphasizing the benefits of preventative care.

I was a strong proponent of the Medicare Modernization Act that Congress passed in 2003 to help seniors realize the benefits of preventative medicine. The bill expanded Medicare's preventative screening services, and began coverage of important procedures, from prostate and breast cancer exams to diabetes and cardiovascular screening.

In addition, the Medicare Modernization Act created Medicare Part D, a prescription drug benefit available to all Medicare beneficiaries. Part D helps seniors afford the drugs they need to stay well – in its first year, the program is already saving seniors an average of $1,100 a year on the cost of medication. The 2007 Open-Enrollment Period for Medicare Part D begins November 15, 2006 and ends December 31, 2006. If you have questions about enrolling in a prescription drug plan, please visit this page on my website to access in-depth information about the program.  You can also contact Medicare directly at www.Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.

By modernizing Medicare, we are helping seniors prevent disease as well as treat it. This allows our loved ones to live healthier lives. I’ll continue working to make Medicare a stronger, more efficient and effective program.
