Gingrey Votes No on Iraq Withdrawal
Calls legislation, “Political Grandstanding”
Washington,
Jul 12, 2007 -
Congressman Phil Gingrey today voted strongly in opposition of H.R. 2956, a bill that would force the withdrawal of U.S forces in Iraq. The House passed the measure, which requires a redeployment of U.S troops out of Iraq to begin in 120 days, by a vote of 223 to 201. This vote to change U.S. strategy in Iraq comes two months before a final progress report on the current military strategy is due from General Petraeus.
“With al Qaeda rebuilding and increasing its ability to strike within the U.S., we can’t reduce our military strategy to political grandstanding. Sadly, today’s bill did just that. If the Democrat leadership was truly interested in securing U.S. interests, we would be having this debate after General Petraeus’s September report, not after the Democrats’ approval ratings hit an all-time low. Make no mistake: this bill is nothing more than a capitulation to the liberal left. It is overly vague, and relies on a hasty decisions rather than a well-reasoned strategy. I was proud to oppose this plan for a date-certain defeat in Iraq.”
Congressman Phil Gingrey, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, has always tried to honor the soldiers fighting in Iraq by voting to give victory the chance it deserves; today's vote was no exception.
