Rep. Phil Gingrey, M.D. today called on Defense Secretary Hagel and the Obama Administration to uphold the Department’s 2009 pledge to build a commissary at Dobbins Air Reserve Base. The Department of Defense recently announced it will no longer construct the facility. With the closure of the Fort McPherson commissary this month, thousands of active duty and retired military personnel will lose access to a benefit they earned and were promised.

“Dobbins ARB is long overdue for such a critical component of any military community,” Gingrey said. “While I am aware of the budgetary realities of sequestration, I urge the Department of Defense to reconsider this decision, which deprives the metro Atlanta military community a convenient and accessible commissary that our veterans deserve.”

In recent years, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) ordered closure of Forts Gillem and McPherson, as well as the Naval Supply School in Athens. These BRAC closures have resulted in shuttering commissaries that service members and veterans have relied upon for years.
